2013 Presidents Message

Be Present – In WCR – In Real Time

In this chaotic world, we juggle work, family, friends, activities and much more, while keeping in touch – but are we really?

We reach out to each other through computer monitors or smart phones. We receive education through webinars or webcasts. We put ourselves and our resumes “out there” through Linked In.

It’s amazing how quickly we’ve grown accustomed to “short-cut multi-tasking” all the while eroding basic personal touches and the art of conversation.

The missing ingredient is Being Present, “in the moment” – and appreciating where one is and who one is with right then and there.

Do we know how to be at our desk without checking or writing text messages, instead of meeting a person to discuss work and life?

Do we know how to be at a function without emailing responses that could just as easily wait until after the function to reply?

What about attending a Continuing Education class just to get those 3 hours and get out of there? Instead of for the benefit of hearing about others’ experiences or speaking of own.

I had the fortunate occasion to hear University of Arizona Coach Andy Lopez share a message which I feel is appropriate here.  He calls it “Red Lining”.  When his players cross the “red line” and onto his field, they are his 100% and when they leave the field and leave his “red line” they belong to the school, their friends and their family.

Meeting and talking or just listening 100% is something that makes every participant better. Being Present in that moment. In Real Time.

When was the last time you had a coffee with anyone and actually listened to them without checking your messages?

Have we lost the Art of Conversation?

My message is this:

Be Present – In Real Time.  Wherever you are – whatever you are doing – Be There!

This year have an abundance of conversations, go to many meetings or classes willing to participate, and join an organization so you can learn and experience or share your own experiences to others so that we can avoid becoming Absent in Real Time.

Whatever you choose to do in your life or career, do it by being present.

As president this year, I promise to BE PRESENT!
